Abstract

A study was made on the .pharmacological property of the myoepithelium of rabbit mammary gland by examining responses of the isolated mammary gland strip and of the intramammary pressure to various drugs.
1. Oxytocin, vasopressin, barium chloride and potassium sulfate produced contraction of the strip Norepinephrine, isoproterenol, aminophylline and papaverine produced relaxation when they were applied on tonic state induced by the above contracting substances.
2. Treatment of the strip with adrenergic beta-receptor antagonist, propranolol and MJ-1999, blocked the relaxant response to norepinephrine and isoproterenol.
3. Vasopressin caused rise of intramammary pressure. Tachyphylaxis wasobserved when the injection of vasopressin was repeated.
4. Isoproterenol inhibited rise of intramammary pressure due to oxytocin. The inhibitory effect of isoproterenol was blocked by treating ;rabbits with MJ-1999. Treatment with the adrenergic beta-receptor antagonist shiftedd the dose action curve of isprotererxol to the right without affecting its maximum.
5. These data indicate that. the myoepithelium of rabbit mammary, gland has same pharmacological property as of other smooth muscle, and it was jound that the myoepithelium has adrenergic beta- receptor in it.
